Police have reported the arrest of two individuals in connection with an alleged “hazardous drone operation” conducted close to the airspace of Boston’s primary airport in the United States. Robert Duffy, aged 42, and Jeremy Folcik, aged 32, were taken into custody on Saturday night on Long Island, which is part of the Boston Harbor Islands. Charges of trespassing have been filed against them, and authorities indicated that they could incur additional charges and financial penalties related to the drones, which were deemed “dangerously close” to Logan International Airport. These arrests occur amidst a recent surge of drone sightings reported across the US north-east. Law enforcement officials have not suggested any connection between these specific arrests and the broader pattern of sightings. According to police, the Boston incident transpired at 16:30 local time (21:30 GMT) on Saturday, when a police officer observed a drone operating “dangerously close” to Logan International Airport. Authorities stated they pinpointed the drone’s location and subsequently traced the operators’ whereabouts to a disused health campus situated on Long Island. Given the drone’s closeness to an airport, FBI counter-terrorism agents provided assistance to the investigation. Upon the arrival of officers at the site, police reported that three individuals tried to escape, with two of them—Mr. Duffy and Mr. Folcik—being caught. A drone was located inside a backpack that Mr. Duffy was carrying, according to police. The third individual suspected is thought to have departed the island aboard a small boat and remains at large. The availability of legal counsel for Mr. Duffy and Mr. Folcik was not immediately apparent. Police indicated that their arraignment had not yet occurred. Meanwhile, US government officials have been working to assure residents in the north-east region that the numerous drone sightings have not revealed any national or public security threats. Reports of flying objects have emerged in states such as New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, with the majority of these observations concentrated in New Jersey. On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas informed ABC News that the federal government is collaborating in “close co-ordination” with state and local authorities regarding this matter. He emphasized that it was “critical” for these entities to be empowered to address drone activity under federal oversight. Mayorkas suggested that the increase in drone sightings might be attributable to a modification in federal law enacted last year, which permits these aircraft to operate during nighttime hours. He stated, “That may be one of the reasons why now people are seeing more drones than they did before, especially from dawn to dusk.” Furthermore, he asserted that he was aware of “no foreign involvement” concerning drone sightings throughout the US north-east. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has urged Congress to provide states with expanded authority to manage drones, which led to the closure of runways at Stewart Airfield in the state for approximately an hour on Friday night. On Sunday, she announced that federal officials would be deploying a drone detection system to New York. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has made a request for this technology to be extended to New Jersey as well. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
