A workshop dedicated to ambulance repairs is slated for construction at the site previously occupied by a carpet retail establishment. The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) plans to establish this garage within the building formerly known as AA Carpets, situated on Chapel Road in Workington, Cumbria. NWAS acquired the property in March 2024, having outgrown its previous facility. In its planning application, GSS Architecture stated that the new workshop would “bring efficient and reliable services to the local community.” The application further noted, “The redevelopment of the Workington Ambulance Station for NWAS aims to improve ambulance maintenance workshops, offer MOT services, and accommodate associated offices.” The existing blue building will be repainted to a mid-grey shade to align with NWAS’s branding. Internal ceilings and partition walls no longer required will be removed, and a new roller shutter door will be installed on the east side of the building to serve as a vehicle entrance. A dedicated ambulance parking area will be developed on the premises, which will include two electric charging stations for the vehicles. For security, CCTV cameras and a 2.4m (7ft 10in) fence are planned for installation. Cumberland Council granted planning permission for this change of use on Friday.
