Willie Collum, the Scottish FA’s head of referee operations, has stated that the yellow card issued to goalkeeper Jack Walton for his challenge on St Mirren forward Toyosi Olusanya should have been upgraded to a red card. This incident occurred during Dundee United’s 2-0 victory last month. Walton had advanced from his goal and tackled Olusanya, making contact high on the forward just beyond the penalty area. Speaking on the Scottish FA’s VAR Review show, Collum explained, “This is not denying a goalscoring opportunity, but it is serious foul play.” He further elaborated, “The height [of the tackle] is important here. There is speed, there is intensity and it meets the criteria of endangering the safety of an opponent.” Collum concluded that “It should have been an on-field review to recommend a red card for serious foul play.”
