The recent hamstring injury sustained by Chelsea defender Reece James has generated external concern, yet the club views the initial scan results as positive. These scans indicate that the 24-year-old has developed a new hamstring issue, distinct from a recurrence of his previous injuries. However, Chelsea is maintaining a cautious approach regarding his potential recovery timeline, particularly after a Telegraph report, external, suggested James could be sidelined for a minimum of one month. The club aims to alleviate pressure on their captain as he commences his rehabilitation. James has previously spoken about his mental struggles during a multi-year period marked by injuries. He had hoped that hamstring surgery performed last December in Finland would resolve his fitness issues, enable his consistent return to play, and help him reclaim his position in the England international squad. Unfortunately, James has instead experienced his second setback of the current season and has not played for England since March 2023. Chelsea’s revamped medical staff continues an ongoing process to enhance his physical robustness, aiming to prepare him to withstand the demanding nature of playing as a physical full-back at the highest level. When questioned about James before Thursday’s Conference League match at Heidenheim, Enzo Maresca reiterated the club’s guarded position on his fitness. “Yes [he’s had a scan] – the only thing we can say is that he is getting better day by day,” Maresca stated. “We don’t know how many days he needs. He’s getting better.” Since signing a contract reportedly worth £250,000-a-week until 2028, James has participated in only 20 Premier League games. Four of these appearances were against Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester United, and Arsenal, occurring before his most recent injury, which he sustained during training in the November international break.
