The relatives of British adolescent Jay Slater, whose death occurred during a vacation in Tenerife, have ceased accepting contributions on the crowdfunding page established following his vanishing. The 19-year-old, a resident of Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, succumbed to a fatal fall on June 17 after becoming disoriented in a mountainous region. His disappearance prompted an extensive search operation by Spanish authorities and garnered significant media attention until his remains were discovered one month subsequent. Debbie Duncan, Mr. Slater’s mother, published an update on the Gofundme platform, which accumulated £72,821, stating: “Donations will be turned off with this final message.” She further commented: “Our journey is far from over but the burdens eased with your support.” Ms. Duncan indicated that the collected funds facilitated their travel and accommodation expenses in Tenerife until arrangements could be made for her son’s body to be repatriated to the UK. “We were able to fund the the Signi search team from the Netherlands who supported us throughout the days when Jay was found,” she stated. Approximately 500 individuals were present at his funeral service in August, where Ms. Duncan remarked: “Jay truly deserved the send-off we were able to give him and we thank you all for that.” Mr. Slater, employed as an apprentice bricklayer, had embarked on his inaugural overseas vacation unaccompanied by his parents to participate in the NRG music festival, held in June at the popular tourist destination of Playa de las Americas. Subsequently, he journeyed with two individuals he encountered at the event, who transported him to their Airbnb accommodation situated within the Rural de Teno national park. Both individuals, interviewed by Spanish law enforcement, were deemed “irrelevant” to the inquiry concerning Mr. Slater’s vanishing. The adolescent departed the lodging on the morning of June 17 and proceeded on foot for approximately 30 minutes prior to contacting a friend, informing them he was disoriented, parched, and that his phone battery was at 1%. A subsequent post-mortem examination indicated that his remains displayed injuries consistent with a descent from an elevated position onto rocky terrain. Ms. Duncan stated: “We lost our beautiful boy in extremely tragic circumstances whilst the world watched.” She continued: “We do not and will never understand how Jay’s story reached every corner of the globe.” Mr. Slater’s disappearance generated considerable speculation and various conspiracy theories, leading to his family and acquaintances also enduring online harassment. Despite the absence of an official live stream for the funeral service, multiple social media profiles promoted access to a fraudulent stream, soliciting likes and monetary payments as part of a deceptive scheme.
