The Victoria Cross, recognized as the Commonwealth’s most distinguished military accolade, has been posthumously conferred upon an Australian soldier for his courageous conduct during the Vietnam War. In 1968, during a confrontation situated north-east of the capital, then referred to as Saigon, Private Richard Norden, who was 19 at the time, advanced under hostile fire to assist an injured fellow soldier and recover the remains of another. Although he survived this engagement, he later passed away at 24 years old in a road accident in Canberra, while serving as a police officer. From 1962 to 1973, over 60,000 Australians, with approximately a quarter being conscripted individuals, participated in the contentious Vietnam War as members of an allied contingent spearheaded by the US. Following the announcement on Remembrance Day, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated, “Private Richard Norden is a true Australian hero… [He] demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness by putting his own life at risk to save and protect his fellow comrades.” On May 14, 1968, Pte Norden’s unit encountered an ambush by North Vietnamese Army soldiers, resulting in the immediate death of a scout and severe injuries to the section Commander. Characterized by a “complete disregard for his own personal safety,” he advanced through intense enemy fire to reach the two soldiers and transported the gravely injured section Commander back to his contingent. Despite being seriously wounded himself at that juncture, Pte Norden subsequently returned for the scout. Upon discovering the scout deceased, he proceeded back to his group to gather grenades before re-entering the combat zone for a third occasion, aiming to secure the area for the recovery of the scout’s body. Australia’s Governor-General Sam Mostyn remarked that this represented a “historic” day for the nation and a “significant” occasion for Pte Norden’s family. In a statement, his widow, Robynn Freeman, conveyed, “We are honoured that His Majesty has approved the Victoria Cross for Australia for Richard, recognising his gallantry actions whilst serving in Vietnam.” A formal presentation ceremony for the medal to Pte Norden’s family is scheduled for a future date, which has not yet been disclosed. Similar to numerous other allied nations, the conflict generated considerable division within Australia, leading to protests by thousands of Australians. By the conclusion of the conflict in 1975, an estimated three million Vietnamese individuals had perished, alongside over 58,000 US casualties and 521 Australian fatalities. Copyright 2024 BBC.
