The States of Guernsey has announced the planned removal of several young sycamore trees from Bluebell Wood, an action intended to enhance wildlife diversity. This felling operation is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. A spokesperson for Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services indicated that the rapidly expanding canopy of sycamore trees has led to diminished light levels. This reduction in light has impeded the growth of bluebells, which depend on pollinating insects to generate seeds for their propagation into new areas. Francis Russell, the invasive non-native species policy and co-ordination officer, stated: “These targeted interventions are intended to try and give bluebells the best possible chance of survival in view of the threat from the more dominant Allium plant.” He further commented: “Although there are no guarantees that these measures will bring immediate benefits, we hope, along with the work of the Guernsey Conservation Volunteers, that it will help give the bluebells the best chance, as well as improving the woodland more generally for people and wildlife.” On Wednesday, the Guernsey Conservation Volunteers undertook the removal of invasive stinking onion bulbs from the woodland. In addition to enhancing bluebell populations, the government anticipates this initiative will broaden the range of habitats for insects, birds, and small mammals. Access to the wood will be maintained at all times via either the top or bottom path; however, signs will be utilized to temporarily restrict passage through certain footpath sections. Given Bluebell Wood’s classification as a Site of Special Significance, the project has been communicated to and endorsed by the Planning Service. The Nature Commission is funding this work through the Storm CiarĂ¡n Recovery Fund. The strategy involves loosely arranging all felled logs and branches into habitat piles and preserving the majority of older trees, as these also offer appealing habitats for wildlife.
