Munster secured only a losing bonus point from their Investec Champions Cup match in France, suffering a 16-14 defeat to Castres at the Stade Pierre Fabre. Castres accumulated 16 points (10 in the first half) from tries by Papalii and Walcker, supplemented by penalties from Fernandez and Le Brun. Munster’s 14 points (7 in the first half) came from two tries by Hodnett, both converted by Crowley. The evening proved challenging for the Irish province. As anticipated, Munster faced early pressure at a venue where Castres had maintained an undefeated record this season. By the 12th minute, Munster had conceded five penalties, with the final one proving costly. Stephen Archer’s high tackle on Louis le Brun led to a line-out, from which former Connacht back-row Abraham Papalii scored a try. Although Thaakir Abrahams initially appeared to prevent the grounding, replays confirmed the score. Jeremy Fernandez missed the conversion. Castres had previously seen two potential scores disallowed: one when Remy Baget failed to ground a kick-through, and another when Munster successfully defended a maul. Mike Prendergast’s squad began to find their rhythm, but after Jack Crowley’s penalty kick fell short, Castres scored again just before the half-hour mark. An expeditious penalty taken by the explosive Papalii led to loose-head prop Quentin Walcker barging over for a try. Fernandez again failed to convert. Three minutes later, try-scorer Walcker received a sin-bin for a shoulder contact to the dipping head of Brian Gleeson. Munster capitalized on their numerical advantage three minutes before half-time when openside flanker John Hodnett scored from the rear of a rolling maul. Crowley successfully converted, reducing the deficit to three points at the interval. However, the first 40 minutes proved costly for Munster due to injuries: prop Dian Bleuler failed a Head Injury Assessment following a poorly executed tackle on Jack Goodhue, and Ireland international scrum half Craig Casey was stretchered off after sustaining a knee injury during the lead-up to Castres’ second try. Less than five minutes into the second half, Castres were reduced to 14 men again after wing Geoffrey Palis committed a deliberate knock-on. Despite this, Munster failed to exploit the advantage; instead, their scrum was overpowered, leading to a penalty for Castres. Fernandez converted the kick, extending Castres’ lead to 13-7. Munster’s injury concerns escalated further when Peter O’Mahony, struggling with his heavily strapped right ankle, exited the field at 55 minutes. He was soon followed by Abrahams, who also left early after receiving a no-arms tackle from Papalii. The momentum appeared to shift in favor of the visitors when, following another missed kick by Julien Dumora, replacement prop Nicolas Corato became the third Castres player to be sin-binned for repeated maul infringements, with under 15 minutes remaining. Munster successfully exploited their numerical superiority this time, with Hodnett scoring his second try from close range. The try was confirmed after a TMO review for a potential knock-on, and Crowley, undeterred by the home crowd, converted to give Munster a 13-14 lead for the first time, with 10 minutes remaining. Despite hopes of securing a late victory, Munster conceded another scrum penalty, which allowed Le Brun, the third Castres player to attempt a kick, to convert at the 74-minute mark, reclaiming the lead for Castres. Munster continued to contest until the end. The match’s final moments, with the clock in the red, saw a penalty awarded on the halfway line. Crowley attempted to maximize the kick’s distance, but Palis acrobatically kept the ball in play before launching it into the stands, prompting widespread celebrations among the home supporters. Munster is scheduled to return to URC action next Friday, traveling to Kingspan Stadium to face Ulster in the initial festive derby. The team lineups were as follows: Castres: Dumora; Palis, Goodhue, Cocagi, Baget; Le Brun, Fernandez; Walcker, Barlot, Collier; Maravat, Nakarawa; Babillot (capt), Ardron, Papalii.
