Mosese Tuipulotu registered his inaugural try for Edinburgh. Challenge Cup: Edinburgh v Bayonne Edinburgh (12) 52 Tries: Currie, Tuipulotu, Graham 2, Van der Merwe, Dodd 2, Ritchie Conversions: Thompson 3, Healy 3 Bayonne (0) 12 Tries: Martin, Germain Conversions: Lopez Edinburgh achieved a comfortable bonus-point victory against Bayonne in the Challenge Cup, following an excellent performance in the second half. Coach Sean Everitt’s team established a 12-point advantage by halftime, with tries contributed by Matt Currie and Mosese Tuipulotu. However, they significantly intensified their play after the interval, adding six more tries. Darcy Graham, who was noted as the best player on the park, scored two tries. Replacement Tom Dodd also contributed two tries, alongside individual scores from Duhan van der Merwe and Jamie Ritchie. For the visiting team, Lucas Martin and Baptiste Germain scored tries during an early second-half attempt to mount a comeback. Nevertheless, Edinburgh maintained a safe distance from the French side before asserting complete dominance. This victory provides Edinburgh with significant momentum ahead of their 1872 Cup double-header against Glasgow Warriors, scheduled around the Christmas period. Following the match, Graham commented on how Edinburgh’s overall fitness enabled them to distance themselves from the opposition in the second half. However, it was the Scotland winger’s speed, determination, and agility that spearheaded the home team’s offensive efforts. Graham initiated Currie’s try with an impressive sprint along the right flank. Subsequently, a winding run by Graham advanced Edinburgh into Bayonne’s 22-meter area, preceding Tuipulotu’s try. The 27-year-old player then collaborated with Wes Goosen to score a try himself. He later demonstrated notable upper-body strength to fend off openside flanker Baptiste Heguy and score his second try. Earlier in the week, considerable attention was given to Van der Merwe extending his contract with Edinburgh, and he scored a try by running under the posts. Yet, Graham provided a clear demonstration – though perhaps unnecessary for many – of his world-class talent. The two Edinburgh players are competing internationally to become Scotland’s all-time leading Test try scorer. However, in the match against Bayonne, Graham was the central figure. Edinburgh’s starting lineup included Goosen; Graham, Currie, Tuipulotu, Van der Merwe; Thompson, Price; Schoeman, Ashman, Hill, Sykes, Gilchrist (c), Ritchie, Crosbie, Bradbury. Substitutes were Cherry, Venter, Sebastian, Skinner, Dodd, Shiel, Healy, Lang. Bayonne’s team comprised Tiberghien; Callandret, Erbinartegaray, Martocq, Spring; Lopez, Germain; Bordelai, Martin, Cotet, Marchois, Poloniati, Capilla, Heguy, Bruni. Replacements were Van Jaarsveld, Cormenier, Scholtz, Bourdeau, Traversier, Machenaud, Segonds, Megdoud. The match was officiated by Referee Morne Ferreira.
