Annual Awards Program Bolsters Cornwall’s Local Economy

An organization dedicated to promoting local enterprises in Cornwall stated that its yearly awards serve to protect them from “imitation, globalism and misleading marketing.” Shop Cornwall, the entity behind the Made in Cornwall initiative, indicated that its recognition program assists local businesses in “stand[ing] out from the crowd.” The awards showcase local businesses across various categories, such as Cornish Craftsmanship, Food Producer, Artist of the Year, Taking Cornwall Places, Eco Champion, Rising Star, and Drink Producer. Andrew Weaver, the managing director of Shop Cornish, commented that the awards program allows consumers to “buy with confidence.” He further explained that the acquired products, food, and beverages are quality assured, and the funds expended are “channelled back into the local circular economy.” Mr. Weaver stated: “With globalism and fakery swallowing up the retail space, coupled with a difficult economic climate and changes in buyers habits, quality handmade products are under threat.” Trindleberry Pets received the gold award in the Taking Cornwall Places category. Christopher Trindle, the owner, remarked: “It’s a great selling point, especially in retail stores with tourist spots and markets, and it has been a massive selling point to customers we sell to nationally.” A representative for Randall Pottery, which earned a bronze award for Cornish Craftsmanship, noted that the recognition bolstered its brand and assisted in demonstrating the “level of quality.” Louise Daykin, the gold award recipient for Cornish Craftsmanship, mentioned that the program reinforced her strong commitment to local sourcing and the production of high-quality items.
