The issuance of Transport for London (TfL) Oyster photocards continues to be suspended in the aftermath of a cyber attack. Approximately 5,000 customers received notifications from TfL indicating that personal information, such as their sort codes and bank account numbers, might have been compromised by hackers during the “cyber security incident” that occurred in early September. A 17-year-old male was apprehended in connection with the breach, which also involved names, email addresses, residential addresses, and Oyster refund information. TfL issued an apology for the service interruption and stated its intention to resume reissuing photocards again “shortly,” though it has not specified an exact date for when its systems will be fully operational. The types of photocards impacted encompass those designated for children, students, care leavers, individuals over 60 years of age, apprentices, and veterans. Stefanie Harman, a student photocard holder, informed BBC London that she was one of the individuals impacted by the cyber attack and had been unable to submit an application for a new photocard. The 24-year-old, who is pursuing a master’s degree, reported that this situation was incurring an additional cost of £50 each month for her, although she has retained her receipts for potential future refunds. She expressed her frustration, stating, “What angers me is that there has been almost radio silence around the topic and absolutely no alternatives have been offered to students.” Ms. Harman further added, “To add to irritation, they (TfL) state they may be able to offer a refund, which I find shocking. It should be a guarantee.” Ms. Harman characterized the absence of updates as “unacceptable” from her perspective, noting that while she could afford to purchase a travelcard, “many students can’t and are priced out of something so essential, public transport.” TfL announced that photocards for individuals aged five to 15 that might have expired since September would continue to be valid if presented to staff until the close of this year. Users of student and care leaver Oyster cards are advised to monitor their travel expenses, as TfL has indicated its intention to reimburse customers for any extra travel costs incurred once the problem is resolved. The transport authority further stated that it is currently unable to conduct annual address verification for individuals over 60, but assured that their existing photocards would remain functional as usual.
