The current US special envoy for Northern Ireland has indicated his desire for President-elect Donald Trump to name a different individual to the position upon assuming office. Joe Kennedy made these remarks on his final day serving as special envoy, a role he held for two years. Kennedy stated that Trump held “warm feelings” for Ireland and anticipated that the “future of the island is a bright one.” Trump is scheduled to be sworn in for his second presidential term in January 2025. Kennedy informed BBC News NI that “Northern ireland can help contribute to the goals that President Trump has articulated.” He further mentioned that during his prior administration, Trump had designated a special envoy to northern Ireland who was a “close confidant of his.” Kennedy additionally commended the efforts of the first and deputy first ministers. He observed that despite approaching their roles “with different visions and different backgrounds,” they addressed “those challenges together.” He lauded First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly for “standing up behind microphones together, saying that there’s enough space in Northern Ireland for those different visions to call home.” He commented, “That’s exactly the type of message that executives want to hear and need to hear and why they’re even more interested and more optimistic about the future for Northern Ireland.” “They’ve come an incredibly long way. I’ve got great confidence in the peace and what they’ve been able to create.” Kennedy asserted that “all the pieces were in place” for global investment in Northern Ireland. He stated, “What Northern Ireland needs now is some time.” He noted that business leaders from the United States and worldwide expressed being “excited” about prospects in Northern Ireland. He further explained that for companies to invest in Northern Ireland, they required “clarity and certainty that the future is strong and sound for decades to come.” “Northern Ireland’s well on its way,” he said.
