A taxi driver responsible for the death of a “highly respected” headteacher, who was cycling to work when a collision occurred, has received a suspended prison sentence. Jeremy Richardson, 61, died in June 2022 after being struck from his bicycle by 60-year-old Fiaz Hussain on Barkerend Road in Bradford. Mr. Hussain, a resident of Barkerend Road, was initially charged with causing death by dangerous driving but admitted guilt to the lesser offense of causing death by careless driving. Hussain, who was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court, stated that he had been unable to see Mr. Richardson approaching him downhill because he was “blinded by the sun”. Prosecutor James Lake informed the court that Mr. Richardson, the headteacher at Beckfoot Thornton School, had collided with Hussain’s Mercedes Vito vehicle after the driver had pulled out in front of him, despite it being “unsafe to do so”. Lake further testified that following the collision, Hussain remained at the scene and contacted an ambulance, while other members of the public administered CPR to the injured cyclist. In a series of victim impact statements presented in court, Mr. Richardson’s family described the devastating effect of his sudden death. His wife, Amanda, recounted receiving hundreds of messages from his current and former colleagues and students, conveying the significant positive influence he had on their lives. She stated, “He was a talented and thoughtful teacher who always brought out the best in others.” She added that he was dedicated to serving communities frequently overlooked and possessed a history of enhancing every educational institution where he held a leadership position. Barrister Rodney Ferm, representing Hussain, characterized the inability to perceive the oncoming cyclist as “a tragic failure”. Ferm noted that his client, a married father of two, had been employed as a taxi driver since 1990, maintaining an impeccable driving record, but had subsequently lost his employment. Judge Jonathan Gibson, in delivering Hussain’s sentence, acknowledged his display of remorse for the offense and stated that after weighing all presented arguments, he determined a six-month jail term could be suspended for a period of 12 months. Hussain is mandated to undertake 80 hours of unpaid community service and participate in 10 days of rehabilitation activity requirements.
