Australia’s head coach, Joe Schmidt, addressed reporters ahead of Sunday’s Autumn Nations Series fixture against Scotland at Murrayfield. He shared key insights from his press conference: While his previous Ireland squad secured victories against Scotland in seven of eight encounters, Schmidt stated, “this is the strongest Scotland I’ve seen, now hitting the sweet spot in their maturity”. He noted that identifying vulnerabilities in past Scottish teams was feasible, but this task proves more challenging currently. Schmidt indicated that Australia’s recent accolades for defeating England and Wales hold little significance for him. He conveyed his constant state as a coach, stating, “I’m permanently uncomfortable”. He recounted a long-standing jest with Vern Cotter, a friend and former Scotland coach, regarding Schmidt’s sole loss to Scotland in 2017, which occurred when the Irish team’s bus experienced a delay en route to Murrayfield. Schmidt disclosed a recent encounter with Greig Laidlaw, the former Scotland scrum-half who coaches Australia centre Samu Kerevi in Japan. Kerevi is suspended for this weekend’s game.
