Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Eminem, has passed away at 69 years old. Her challenging relationship with her son was a recurring theme in much of his early musical work. Dennis Dennehy, a representative for the rapper, verified her death to American media outlets. While the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed, Nelson was known to be suffering from lung cancer. Eminem has not yet issued a public statement regarding his mother’s passing. Their strained relationship was most prominently depicted in “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” one of his major hits. In the 2002 track, Eminem vehemently accused her of drug abuse and neglect. He stated, “Witnessin’ your mama poppin’ prescription pills in the kitchen,” and later added, “keep telling yourself that you was a mom.” In 1999, Nelson initiated a defamation lawsuit against her son concerning another of his popular songs, “My Name Is.” She later claimed the lawsuit was her lawyer’s suggestion, and the case was settled out of court for $25,000 (£19,000). The rapper, who himself struggled with prescription drug issues, drew parallels between his own addiction experiences and his mother’s, declaring on the 2009 song “My Mom,” “that’s why I’m on what I’m on ’cause I’m my mom.” Nelson authored a memoir in 2008, titled *My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem*, where she expressed being “heartbroken” by her son’s allegations about her. Nevertheless, the contentious nature of their relationship seemed to diminish over time. On his 2013 song “Headlights,” the rapper conveyed regret for some of his previous lyrics. He rapped, “I’m sorry, Mama, for Cleanin’ Out My Closet. At the time I was angry. Rightfully? Maybe so. Never meant to take it that far, though.” They reportedly remained largely estranged throughout the remainder of her life. However, upon Eminem’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, she publicly offered her congratulations. In a video that was subsequently removed, she stated, “Marshall, I want to say, I could not let this day go by without congratulating you. I love you very much. I knew you’d get there. It’s been a long ride. I’m very, very proud of you.” Post navigation Strictly Come Dancing Enthusiast Receives Unexpected Call from Winner Wojtek: The Bear Who Served as a Private in the Polish Army
