Expressions of remembrance have been shared for a dedicated sportsman and athlete who passed away in a vehicle collision in Aberdeenshire. Andrew Johnstone, aged 64, died in the single-car incident on an unclassified road near Torphins last week. Mr Johnstone’s family stated that he was a former Commonwealth Games triathlete and engaged in a variety of activities, including hillwalking, skiing, swimming, and cycling. He was also an enthusiastic cricketer, participating periodically at Crathie. In a statement, his family highlighted his lifelong dedication to an active lifestyle from a young age. They said: “He was selected for the Scottish Commonwealth Games Triathlon team when it was first introduced as a demonstration event in 1990,” adding, “He ran the Munros in record time with his good friend Rory Gibson in 1992.“His job as a medical rep for the whole of the north of Scotland enabled him to explore the country he loved with his beloved dogs. “He was able to pursue his many outdoor activities including hillwalking, cycling, swimming and skiing. His enthusiasm inspired many of the huge number of people he met along the way, most of whom remained lifelong friends.” Following the passing of his wife, Kate, in 2000, Mr Johnstone ascended Mount Shasta in California in her memory, an endeavor that raised funds for the Macmillan cancer charity. The statement concluded by noting, “He will be sadly missed by his brother Michael, partner Nuria and his many friends including his beloved dog and constant companion, Ruby.” The collision occurred at some point between 23:15 on Thursday, November 28, and 06:30 on Friday, November 29, on an unclassified route that connects the A980 at Torphins with the B9119 at Tornaveen. Although emergency personnel responded, Mr Johnstone was declared deceased at the site. Authorities are requesting that anyone possessing details regarding the incident reach out to the police, citing reference number 0454 from November 29.
