Kettering Town Football Club (KTFC), a non-league team, has revealed plans to collaborate with a community centre initiative, aiming to convert it into a central community hub. The club confirmed it has obtained a 17-year lease for the former Maplefields School sports hall, situated on Britannia Road. The Maplefields community centre project was originally launched in 2013 by two local councillors alongside a dedicated group of volunteers. George Akhtar, who serves as chairman for KTFC, stated: “We are privileged to be able to work with both the Maplefields community centre project and the KTFC Community Trust to save and grow this heritage community asset for future generations.” This location holds historical importance for local supporters, as it previously functioned as a gathering spot for KTFC fans traveling to games at their former venue, Rockingham Road. Following its renovation, the facility is slated to include a modern kitchen, a sports hall, dedicated office and classroom areas, and improved outdoor spaces. Lesley Thurland, the founder and director of the Maplefields community centre project, commented: “I’m absolutely delighted that we have found a lasting solution for this brilliant community space. “After many years of hard work, I can’t wait to see the centre being enjoyed by residents young and old.” The opening of the facility is anticipated by February 2025.
