The impending threat of stormy weather this weekend has prompted changes to a local Christmas celebration. Organisers of the Great Grimsby Christmas announced on Saturday that a stage planned for St James’ Square would not be erected, attributing the decision to Storm Bert. However, food stalls are still scheduled to be present in the square, and other events planned for Grimsby Minster will proceed. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for both Saturday and Sunday, forecasting winds of 40-60mph (65-96km/h) and heavy rain. Some musical performances will be relocated inside the Minster. Nevertheless, dance performances have been cancelled due to the unavailability of a stage, according to the organisers. Councillor Hayden Dawkins commented: “We have to make sure both visitors and people who are taking part in putting on the celebration are all safe”. He added: “We’d like to thank all of the participants who were due to take part for their work and preparation. “I know it’s really disappointing not to be able to perform, but we hope you’ll come down and enjoy the day.” Activities are set to begin at 11:00 GMT, with the day culminating in the ceremonial switching on of the town’s Christmas lights.
