The BBC Radio Berkshire swim team has concluded the initial day of its Children in Need fundraising challenge. This initiative, known as The Thousand Mile Challenge, involves teams from BBC radio stations nationwide, with each participating station aiming to swim a distance of 24 miles (38.6km) over the course of the week. The five-member team achieved a combined total of 357 lengths at Reading’s Palmer Park Leisure Centre on Monday, equating to nearly 5.5 miles (9km). Sali Shobowale, a swimmer on the team, described the first day as “tough” but stated that the collective effort of her teammates and the charitable cause they were supporting provided the motivation to persevere. She remarked, “I’m so glad we did it.” Shobowale added, “There were times during the swim where I felt tired and felt like giving up, but seeing my teammates swimming alongside me really gave me the push I needed to carry on.” The complete roster of the team includes Ms Shobowale, Katherine Bett, Phil Mercer, Rena Annobil, and Ben Pritchard. Ms Bett commented that “quite a few nerves” were present on Monday morning, yet the team ultimately “surpassed our own expectations,” noting that both Mr Mercer and Ms Shobowale managed to swim “further than they’d ever swum before.” Despite Mr Mercer “battled through cramp in his legs,” the team maintained a positive outlook, particularly as the challenge is anticipated to intensify. Ms Bett stated, “Apparently day two is the hardest, after the excitement of the start of the challenge fades away.” She concluded, “So we’re all trying to brace ourselves for a tough one tomorrow.” Further details are available at bbc.co.uk/swim.
