Manchester City failed to gain points for the third occasion this season. Despite an apparent opening created by Chelsea that could have intensified the title competition, Everton delivered an excellent display, securing a merited victory. Seizing an opportunity to narrow the gap to a formidable title competitor to three points is crucial. Lucy Hope and Honoka Hayashi netted for Everton during the first half; however, their lead could have been more substantial. A penalty scored by Mary Fowler late in the game offered little comfort. City has contended with a growing list of injuries, yet they have performed commendably despite these challenges. Nevertheless, on Sunday, Gareth Taylor’s team displayed a deficit of vigor and attacking prowess in the offensive zone, failing to adequately test Everton’s well-structured defense. A feeling of déjà vu may be present among some City supporters. Last season concluded with Chelsea seemingly relinquishing the title, only for City to suffer a defeat at home against Arsenal, enabling Emma Hayes’ team to secure their fifth consecutive title. The upcoming winter break appears well-timed for City, as Lauren Hemp, Khadija Shaw, and Vivianne Miedema are anticipated to rejoin the squad in the new year. Regrettably for City, and for neutral observers desiring a WSL champion other than Chelsea, Sonia Bompastor’s team has not yet achieved its peak performance level.
