The ongoing closure of a public toilet facility has been attributed to adverse weather conditions and delays caused by contractors. Renovation work on the toilets in Montpellier Gardens, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, was initially slated for completion by October, in time for the town’s literature festival. However, during a council meeting on Monday, borough council leaders stated they are now unable to guarantee the building’s readiness by the end of January. Alisha Lewis, Cabinet member for finance and assets, stated that the causes of the delay were “fully outside” the council’s control. Ms. Lewis also conveyed that the “regrettable” postponement would not result in additional expenses for taxpayers, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. She further elaborated, stating: “One thing we have been really clear on is that the taxpayer will not be footing the bill for those delays and that the developer will be swallowing the costs, which I think is fully reasonable.” She added, “If you can’t deliver a project on time, we certainly won’t be paying extra for the privilege.” Councillor Emma Nelson commented that this project served as another instance of works exceeding their scheduled completion. She remarked, “Just like the Wilson project, overdue. The Minster Exchange, overdue. Electric vehicle chargers on Bath Road, overdue, and now the public conveniences overdue.”
