Air travel operations at Edinburgh Airport were suspended for multiple hours on Sunday, attributed to a technical system problem. Shortly before 4:00 PM GMT, an airport representative stated that engineers were actively addressing an issue impacting air traffic control. Both arriving and departing flights experienced considerable delays, with a number of services being completely cancelled. Subsequently, the airport announced that the problem had been resolved and flight services recommenced around 7:00 PM. Nevertheless, passengers were still urged to verify the status of their flights with their respective airlines prior to heading to the airport. As engineers worked to rectify the fault, numerous flights were either cancelled or rerouted over several hours. Specifically, a 15:30 Turkish Airlines flight originating from Istanbul and a 16:05 Ryanair flight from Gran Canaria were diverted to Manchester Airport. Edinburgh Airport released a statement on X on Sunday evening, declaring: “The IT issue affecting Air Traffic Control has now been resolved and flights have now resumed.” The statement added: “We would like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding.” Air Navigation Solutions, the air traffic control service provider for Edinburgh Airport, also confirmed to the BBC that the difficulties arose from “a technical issue.” The company stated: “Our engineers have restored the system to operation and flight operations re-commenced at 18:25. We regret the inconvenience that has been caused.” Andrea Racekova, a 26-year-old apprentice journalist with BBC News, was one of the individuals impacted by the cancellations. She had journeyed from Shetland to Edinburgh with the intention of boarding a flight to her residence in Slovakia for a critical blood test, which she had been anticipating for months. Reporting from the airport, she recounted: “I found out about the whole issue through Ryanair staff at the gate after we’d been asked to queue up for boarding. “We were asked to sit down as the flight wouldn’t leave for at least another 30 minutes.” Andrea awaited updates, but her flight was ultimately cancelled. She further commented: “People around me are very frustrated, some of them have connecting flights to catch, so the general mood here is very tense.” She added: “The airport staff have been trying to calm everyone down. They’ve been very helpful, but I understand some passengers are very upset.”
