While Canterbury is adorned with decorated trees, twinkling lights, and festive market stalls during Christmas, some residents contend with loneliness. In response, Major Ali Friday from The Salvation Army has been present at The Canterbury Bakery, offering a cheerful greeting and an opportunity for conversation to those who enter. These “loneliness cafes,” named Heart to Heart, have been conducted for two hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the venue situated in The Marlowe Arcade. Major Friday stated that she “recognised there was an issue of loneliness within the city and that it can have a deep impact on some people, so we wanted to be able to do something about it”. Since the Heart to Heart events commenced four weeks ago, over 20 individuals have engaged in conversation with Major Friday, who expressed surprise at the diverse backgrounds of participants. She observed, “People who are homeless, those struggling with loneliness, and even people who have just walked in.” Major Friday added, “It has been truly humbling to provide a listening ear to such a variety of people and see how meaningful a simple conversation can be.” Neil Terry, the front of house manager at The Canterbury Bakery, also acknowledged that this period of the year can be challenging and expressed his satisfaction with being involved in the program. He remarked, “Christmas can be really lonely for a lot of people. It’s nice to provide a place where people feel comfortable to get together and have a chat over a coffee and cake.” Major Friday indicated that although Heart to Heart would be paused over Christmas, she hoped to resume it in the New Year and commended everyone who had attended so far. She commented: “It takes a lot of courage for someone to step in and open up. It’s a reminder that everyone carries unseen struggles, and the power of a listening ear can truly make a difference. There is a real possibility that this will be extended. If people continue to come, then there is a clear need.” Post navigation Scottish Cat Discovered 300 Miles Away in Coventry RNLI Issues Tide Safety Warning Following Coastal Rescues
