An independent Member of Parliament, Iqbal Mohamed, utilized his inaugural address to Parliament to press the government to “halt the genocide” in Gaza, advocating for an immediate ceasefire. Mohamed, who was recently elected to represent Dewsbury and Batley, delivered this plea in the House of Commons on Tuesday. In his address, he denounced what he termed the “double standards” displayed by certain politicians who condemn Russia’s aggression in Ukraine yet subsequently “defend the most heinous crimes of Israel.” Mohamed further stated that the “ongoing genocide” played a “huge factor” in his successful election to Parliament during the General Election held in July. He remarked: “When the Prime Minister endorsed the rights of the Israeli government to cut off water and electricity to the people of Gaza, people in Dewsbury and Batley said, ‘No, not in our name’.” Mohamed was one of four pro-Palestinian Independent MPs elected after defeating Labour MPs, an outcome linked to the party’s response to the Middle East crisis, which escalated last October when Hamas attacked Israel. Subsequently, he has united with Shockat Adam, Ayoub Khan, and Adnan Hussain to establish a parliamentary group, which is led by former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. In his address, Mohamed further asserted that “most British people want an immediate ceasefire” and “an end to the UK’s complicity.” He stated: “They are sick and tired of the double standards, with politicians lining up to condemn and sanction Russian aggression in Ukraine, yet defend the most heinous crimes of Israel.”The compassion for Palestinian lives is not inversely proportional to the compassion for Israeli lives or vice versa.”All lives are equal, and our compassion must also be equal.” He additionally urged the government to “halt the genocide and to end the 76-year-old, long unlawful occupation.” Commencing his speech, Mohamed expressed his pride in being “the second local, born and bred MP for Dewsbury” and the “eldest of six children born to Gujarati Indian immigrants.” He further recounted a childhood memory where he prayed to God to become either a parliamentarian or a Blue Peter presenter. He concluded by stating that “if a Blue Peter producer is watching I’m still available for a guest appearance or a Christmas special.” Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has, on prior occasions, advocated for an immediate ceasefire, the prompt release of all hostages, and a rapid increase in humanitarian aid directed into Gaza.
