A Chinese spacecraft carrying a three-person crew, which included the nation’s first female space engineer, has successfully docked following a journey that lasted over six hours. For a period of six months, the crew intends to utilize the domestically developed space station as a primary operational hub to perform experiments and execute spacewalks. This endeavor supports Beijing’s objective of accumulating expertise and data for its future goal of landing a person on the Moon by 2030. The launch of Shenzhou 19 was proclaimed a “complete success” by Beijing. This mission is part of China’s ambitious plan for 100 launches in what marks a record year for its space exploration efforts, as it seeks to surpass its competitor, the United States. The BBC received unusual permission to access the Jiuquan Satellite launch centre in Gansu, observing the spacecraft’s liftoff from a distance of just over a kilometer. As the rocket launcher ascended, flames erupted, illuminating the Gobi Desert amidst a thunderous roar. Crowds of hundreds lined the thoroughfares, waving and acclaiming the taikonauts—China’s term for astronauts—as they departed. Upon arrival at the Tiangong space station, the Shenzhou 19 crew encountered three other astronauts currently operating the Shenzhou 18 mission, who are scheduled to return to Earth on 4 November. Merely two years prior, President Xi Jinping stated, “to explore the vast cosmos, develop the space industry and build China into a space power is our eternal dream”. However, certain observers in Washington perceive the nation’s aspirations and rapid advancements as a significant danger. Earlier this year, Nasa chief Bill Nelson commented that the US and China were “in effect, in a race” to reach the Moon again, expressing concern that Beijing intends to assert territorial claims there. Nelson informed legislators of his conviction that their civilian space program also served military objectives. Conversely, in Dongfeng Space City, a municipality established to facilitate the launch site, China’s space program receives widespread acclaim.
