A nuclear organization has inaugurated a cybersecurity hub designed to bolster its defenses against information technology threats. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) launched this facility at Herdus House in Moor Row, situated near the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria. The authority stated that the Group Cyberspace Collaboration Centre (GCCC) offers a venue for experts to exchange knowledge on safeguarding nuclear sites from “evolving” threats. Last month, Sellafield, which operates under the NDA, was penalized £332,500 after acknowledging violations of security regulations. These breaches rendered its IT systems susceptible to unauthorized access and potential data loss. A spokesperson for Sellafield affirmed that the organization treats cyber security “extremely seriously,” a commitment demonstrated by its guilty pleas. The spokesperson further noted that the company has not experienced a successful cyber attack and has implemented “significant” improvements. The NDA is the governmental body responsible for the cleanup of the United Kingdom’s earliest nuclear sites. In August, it also opened another cyber security operations facility located in Warrington. David Peattie, CEO of the NDA Group, commented: “When it comes to security, we are never complacent, and we continually invest in our expertise and our technology to further strengthen our capability.” A Sellafield spokesperson indicated that cyber threats are “continually evolving” and confirmed the company’s ongoing collaboration with the nuclear regulator “to ensure we meet the high standards rightly required of us.”
