Residents living in specific eastern areas of the Isle of Man are being urged to participate in public information sessions concerning a planned sewage treatment facility. Manx Utilities intends to establish several intermediate pumping stations within Laxey and a treatment plant at Axnfell Plantation, which is also designated to serve Lonan. The local authority responsible for the region expressed that while the wait to reach this stage had been “frustrating,” there was a degree of “relief” that the proposals were now progressing. Garff Commissioner Melanie Christian requested that residents attend informal drop-in sessions in Laxey and Baldrine on 28 and 29 November to learn about the plans. This initiative comes after the conclusion last month of a hearing regarding an appeal against Manx Utilities’ proposals for a regional sewage treatment facility in Peel, located in the west. Similar to Manx Utilities’ plans for Peel, the proposed works for Garff are designed to cease the discharge of raw sewage into the sea, a practice currently occurring at Laxey Bay and Baldrine. Christian stated that selecting the Axnfell site represented “a compromise on both sides.” This is due to the fact that the current planning proposal succeeds a previously rejected application for a location at the Cairns, situated on the eastern side of the town’s harbour. Those earlier plans were denied in 2020, following resident concerns regarding potential odors and a possible decline in local tourism. She indicated that while Manx Utilities “did prefer the Cairns site from an engineering point of view,” residents had raised objections based on social considerations. Christian noted that with an environmental impact assessment, scoping reports, and the planning application yet to be finalized, a considerable period would likely pass before construction could commence. The commissioner urged residents to participate in the informal information sessions scheduled for the end of this month at Laxey Sailing Club and Baldrine Church Hall, specifically targeting those residing in the Axnfell vicinity or close to the planned pumping station locations.
