The employer of a British woman, who was among six tourists to die in Laos due to a suspected mass poisoning, has characterized her as a gifted lawyer with a promising future. Simone White passed away in a hospital after consuming alcohol in Vang Vieng, a popular destination for backpackers, which is believed to have been contaminated with methanol. In a statement, the law firm Squire Patton Boggs expressed: “It is with deep sadness that we mourn the tragic passing of our dear friend and colleague Simone White.” The firm characterized Ms White, who hailed from Orpington, south-east London, as “someone who epitomised our firm values.” The firm further stated: “Our thoughts go out to all of Simone’s family, friends, and those colleagues and clients who had the privilege to work with and know Simone. She will be sincerely missed.” On the professional networking site LinkedIn, under the firm’s statement, colleagues and other professionals within the legal field extended their condolences and recounted memories. A colleague from the firm commented: “Simone was one of the kindest, most genuine and thoughtful people I have ever met.” The colleague continued: “She was also hilarious. She was a core part (/the unofficial social secretary) of our friendship group, always organising dinners, drinks and trips away for us. She lived life to the fullest and encouraged everyone around her to do the same.” He concluded by saying that Ms White would be “forever missed.” Another individual wrote: “Simone was such a bright light – may she rest in peace.” A woman who stated she collaborated with Ms White during their time at Newcastle University characterized her as “such a lovely girl.” Holly Bowles, a 19-year-old Australian, represents the sixth fatality attributed to the suspected poisoning. Among the other victims are her friend Bianca Jones, also 19, an unidentified US man, and two Danish women, aged 19 and 20. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) issued a statement on Thursday, indicating its provision of support to Ms White’s family and other British citizens impacted by the event.
