Dame Judi Dench, the acclaimed multi-award-winning actress, reached her 90th birthday on Monday, marking a significant personal and professional milestone. Residing in Surrey, Dame Judi’s extensive career has encompassed decades of work across theatre, television, and film, earning her numerous accolades, including an Oscar, a Tony, and two Golden Globes. Her diverse acting portfolio includes performances in Shakespearean productions and her portrayal of M in seven installments of the Bond franchise. In an interview with BBC Radio Surrey, fellow actress and friend Jenny Seagrove characterized Dame Judi’s “wicked sense of humour” as “legendary”. Ms. Seagrove, who also manages the Mane Chance Horse Sanctuary located at Compton, close to Guildford, commented: “When you work with her you know you’re in the presence of a real talent. You think ‘I’d better up the bar a bit.'” She further elaborated, “On screen, on stage, the very best make you think they’re doing nothing, whereas it’s like a swan with the legs paddling very fast underneath.” Bill Kenwright, the late theatrical producer and Ms. Seagrove’s partner, collaborated with Dame Judi on numerous occasions. Additionally, Dame Judi has lent her support to various local initiatives, such as a hospice in Crawley, a podcast aimed at fundraising for theatre professionals, and a fund dedicated to researching age-related macular degeneration, an eye loss condition with which she herself has been diagnosed. Regarding her birthday, she previously stated: “It’s just that you get a bit nervous when everybody says 90.” She added, “I don’t want to think of 90 much, I’m going to think about [turning] 29.” Ms. Seagrove recounted an instance where a friend of her father inquired if Dame Judi would be willing to attend his village’s Shakespeare and poetry society. Ms. Seagrove quoted the response she received: “I forwarded it to her PA and got a reply saying ‘Judi can’t come, but she’d love to film a sonnet for them.'” She continued, “So, duly, she filmed a sonnet for them, a beautiful sonnet about love.” She described the impact: “It was the highlight of their evening, Judi sitting in an armchair just speaking to the camera the words of Shakespeare.” Ms. Seagrove concluded, “That’s what she does. She just goes above and beyond.” For more updates, follow BBC Surrey on Facebook and X. Story ideas can be submitted to southeasttoday@bbc.co.uk or via WhatsApp at 08081 002250. Copyright 2024 BBC.
