NHS Somerset Encourages Eligible Residents to Receive Covid Vaccination

According to NHS Somerset, 100,000 individuals in the county, representing 50% of those who qualify, have not yet received their Covid-19 winter vaccinations. With just one month remaining to obtain a vaccination, the NHS is encouraging eligible individuals to schedule appointments at clinics, GP surgeries, or pharmacies, or to attend one of the available walk-in clinics. The autumn/winter vaccination initiative has, to date, resulted in 50% of Somerset’s eligible residents receiving a Covid-19 vaccination. Shona Turnbull-Kirk, who serves as the senior reporting officer for vaccinations at NHS Somerset, stated: “We know that immunity fades over time and these viruses change each year.” NHS Somerset indicates that the winter vaccination program is crucial for limiting the transmission of severe diseases, noting that Covid-19 vaccines are being administered concurrently with flu vaccines this year. Ms Turnbull-Kirk further commented: “If you are vaccinated and catch flu or Covid-19 this winter, you are likely to have milder symptoms and recover faster, cutting your risk of being hospitalised.” Dr Bharat Pankhania, a senior clinical lecturer specializing in communicable diseases at the University of Exeter, is advocating for individuals to receive the vaccination. He described it as “concerning” that 100,000 individuals have yet to present themselves for vaccination. He also stated: “We still get people admitted to hospital with severe reactions to a Covid-19 infection and we still get people dying.” Dr Pankhania remarked: “As a result of the vaccine we are now back to normal, we’re not in lockdown.” He further noted: “Like all vaccines, a small percentage of people will end up with side effects but, by and large, for the majority of the population the vaccine saves your life,” he added. Eligibility extends to all adults aged 65 and above, individuals residing in care homes for older adults, frontline health and social care personnel, and those categorized within a clinical risk group. Eligible individuals have the option to schedule a vaccine appointment online, through the NHS app, or by dialing 119.
