Plans to merge two schools experiencing a decline in pupil numbers have drawn an angry response from some parents. The Greenshaw Learning Trust, which operates Moat Primary Academy and the nearby Robinswood Primary Academy in Matson, Gloucester, stated that insufficient pupil numbers make it unsustainable to maintain both sites, leading to the proposed closure of Moat. Jodean, a parent with a son in year five, conveyed her feelings to BBC Radio Gloucestershire, stating: “My children are so happy to be here, it would be upsetting if it shut.” However, Will Smith, chief executive of Greenshaw, affirmed the trust’s belief that “it’s in the best children’s interests to amalgamate the schools”. The two schools are located a 10-minute walk from each other. Jess, whose son is in reception at Moat Primary, expressed that the school holds a “hell of a lot” of significance for her family. She recounted: “My mum’s worked here for 20 years, I came here as a pupil,” adding, “All my siblings came here, I always thought I could see him just staying here until he goes off to secondary school. It’s just a shame.” A consultation period for the proposal is currently active and will conclude on 6 December. If the plan is approved, Moat School is slated for closure either from 1 September 2025 or 1 September 2026. Mr Smith further explained, stating: “We have many vacancies at Moat, we have a small number at Robinswood.” He also acknowledged the likely parental reaction, commenting: “I would be surprised if parents didn’t respond in a heated way.” He concluded by asserting the trust’s commitment to engagement: “We’re talking about children’s lives and education, but we always want to give people a chance to ask questions, and we’re open as a trust,” he added.
