Barnsley’s town council has announced plans for a “gateway showpiece” sculpture to be erected on an upcoming roundabout in the vicinity of the town. The design of this artwork, destined for the roundabout situated west of Goldthorpe, will be a collaboration between sculptor Dan Jones and emerging artist Ailish Treanor. Mr. Jones, a resident of Dearne Valley, stated that the piece is intended to “reflect this wonderful place” and “honour local residents.” The project’s funding source is part of the £23.1 million allocated to Barnsley Council from the government’s Towns Fund. Mr. Jones further commented: “Having lived in the all my life, this area has greatly influenced my artwork. I collaborate closely with community members on nearly all my projects, and I aim to honour local residents’ love for their village.” He also emphasized: “It’s particularly important to me that every aspect of the sculpture is designed and crafted within the Dearne Valley.” Throughout his career, Mr. Jones has produced sculptures for various settings, including public spaces, rural environments, and private collections, both across the UK and in South Korea. Barnsley Council confirmed that the initiative would be executed in partnership with Beam, a cultural organization operating throughout the north of England. Ms. Treanor, an artist based in Barnsley, is known for her multi-disciplinary approach, creating sculptures with materials such as paper and paint. She expressed her anticipation, stating: “As an artist, I hope to produce public sculptures of my own in the future, so I’m looking forward to finding out as much as I can about what a project like this entails.” To gather input for the artwork, Mr. Jones and Ms. Treanor are scheduled to conduct community engagement workshops in Goldthorpe and Dearne, inviting residents to contribute their ideas. Councillor Robin Franklin, who serves as the council’s spokesperson for regeneration and culture, indicated that the roundabout is expected to be instrumental in fostering opportunities for local economic expansion. He remarked: “We are proud of the work we are doing to build a bright future for Goldthorpe, with art and culture playing an integral part.” Councillor Franklin added: “It is only fitting everyone arriving in the town is offered an inspiring and uplifting welcome and this new artwork will provide just that.” Post navigation Former Courtroom Serves as Temporary Cinema for New Paddington Film DJ Fat Tony Sustains Facial Injuries After Incident at Kent Performance
