Rail passengers have been advised to make preparations in advance of a city centre railway station’s two-month closure for a £10 million upgrade. Salford Central is scheduled to close from February until April of the coming year to allow for the construction of a new ticket office, accessible toilets, and improved platform ramps. This project, a joint effort by Transport for Greater Manchester (TFGM) and Network Rail, will coincide with ongoing work to add a third platform at Salford Crescent station. This means the city will experience a cessation of rail services over several weekends in 2025. Chris Coleman of Network Rail stated that transport officials were “sorry for this disruption, and grateful for the patience of the Salford community while these important upgrades take place”. During the closure, from February 10 to April 21, no trains will stop at Salford Central. The station is also slated for additional closures on April 27 and May 4. Passengers affected by these shutdowns will be permitted to use their tickets on Bee Network buses, which will operate between Salford Crescent, Salford Central, and other city centre stations. A TFGM spokesman indicated that the £10 million upgrade is set to deliver “much-needed” improvements, including enhancing accessibility at Salford’s largest railway station. The project is slated to commence in January, prior to the closures, with workers installing inclusive passenger information boards such as braille maps, customer information points, and Bee Network signs. Nathaniel Yates, a rail accessibility activist, commented that these improvements represent a “welcome step forward,” while also acknowledging that there remains a “long way to go to improve access at train stations.”
