The legal proceedings against a trainee health worker, who was accused of sexually assaulting two patients, have concluded without a verdict. Ieuan Crump, aged 26, faced accusations of inappropriately touching two women while conducting bladder scans at the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran during August 2021. Mr. Crump had entered pleas of not guilty to nine charges of sexual assault, which included three counts of assault by penetration. The trial, held at Cardiff Crown Court, had extended for more than two weeks. However, following a second day of deliberations, the jury was discharged by Judge Vanessa Francis. During the course of the trial, evidence presented to the court indicated that Mr. Crump was employed at the hospital as a healthcare assistant while simultaneously pursuing a nursing degree. After a two-week trial, the jury had retired on Thursday to deliberate on their verdict. Nevertheless, on 4 November – the second day of their deliberations – Judge Francis dismissed them, bringing the trial to an end. Addressing the jury, Judge Francis stated that she was unable to “go into the details” regarding the reasons for their dismissal, adding that doing so could prejudice any potential future re-trial.
