A landfill facility has initiated an appeal concerning a closure notice issued by the Environment Agency (EA). This notice, targeting Walleys Quarry in Silverdale, Staffordshire, was issued on 28 November, following years of protests from local residents and multiple legal disputes. The EA stated that the site’s management was inadequate and that continued operation could lead to substantial long-term pollution. An inspector designated by the Planning Inspectorate (PINS) will now determine the outcome of this appeal. A spokesperson representing Walleys Quarry confirmed, stating: “We have challenged the decision to issue a closure notice for the landfill site and are clear that keeping the site open delivers greatest benefit and sustainability for the site.” The spokesperson added, “Walleys Quarry have made extensive factual and legal submissions to the Environment Agency which in our view they have not substantively engaged with.” The statement concluded, “As a business we completely reject the accusations made by the Environment Agency relating to poor management of the landfill site and will progress this appeal with the Planning Inspectorate.” Following the submission of the appeal, the EA has canceled a public meeting that was scheduled for Monday at 19:00 GMT, intended to address inquiries regarding the notice.
