Experts have successfully conducted a controlled explosion of a World War Two bomb that was found on a construction site. The buried ordnance was unearthed near Station Road in East Tilbury, Essex, at 11:30 GMT on Tuesday, with its detonation taking place on Friday. Ch Supt Scott Egerton stated: “It was decided detonation of the device at the scene was preferable to making an attempt to move it.” The railway line between Grays and Pitsea had been temporarily closed earlier, and disruptions were anticipated to persist into the early evening. Following the discovery, the site was cordoned off to allow Ministry of Defence experts to assess the area, but this measure has since been lifted. Thurrock district commander Ch Insp Anthony Atkin commented: “This discovery was made on a fairly remote construction site and, as such, the impact on the wider community has, so far, been minimal.” For updates on Essex news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
