Mark Matthews, currently an Assistant Chief Fire Officer, has expressed his “proud” sentiment regarding his upcoming appointment as the new Chief Fire Officer for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. He is set to succeed the retiring Chief Executive, Dawn Whittaker, effective January 1. Mr. Matthews’ tenure with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service began in 1998, when he started as a firefighter. He stated: “I am extremely proud and privileged to have been afforded the opportunity to lead the service I am so committed to.” Additionally, Mr. Matthews commended Ms. Whittaker, who has held her position since 2016, acknowledging her “unwavering contribution and brave leadership, both nationally and locally, has been an inspiration to many of us across the service and the sector”. He further commented: “I intend to build on our strong history and, with support from colleagues and partners, continue to adapt to the needs of our communities to keep them safe.” In 2022, Mr. Matthews was honored with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal, an accolade presented to public service workers.
