Sunderland aims to secure a victory as they travel to Preston on Wednesday evening, having recently played to a goalless draw against QPR over the weekend. Currently leading the Championship standings, The Black Cats have maintained an unbeaten streak across their last six matches, comprising four wins and two draws. In contrast, Preston, known as the Lilywhites, have not achieved a win in their last three outings, recording two draws and one loss. Prior to the upcoming midweek Championship fixtures, they sit merely two points clear of the relegation zone. Preston North End has experienced two defeats in their last three league encounters with Sunderland, alongside one victory. This number of losses equals their total from the preceding 14 meetings between the clubs, which included six wins, six draws, and two losses. Sunderland has been defeated in three of their last five league visits to Deepdale, securing one win and one draw. This sequence includes a 2-1 loss suffered in August 2023. At their home ground, Deepdale, Preston holds an unbeaten record in their last 21 midweek league matches, consisting of 10 wins and 11 draws. Only Manchester City currently maintains a more extended active streak of this nature within the top four divisions of English football, with 49 games unbeaten. Sunderland has emerged victorious in both of their midweek league fixtures this season and has the opportunity to achieve three consecutive wins for the first time since February 2023. Paul Heckingbottom, Preston’s manager, remains undefeated in his five prior EFL meetings against Sunderland, having secured four wins and one draw. He has only encountered one other team, Birmingham, more frequently without suffering a loss (six games played, four wins, two draws).
