Humberside Police has inaugurated a memorial garden specifically dedicated to police dogs. The garden features commemorative plaques for canines that have died in the line of duty, a plaque from The Thin Blue Paw Foundation, and a newly planted memorial tree. A ceremony took place at the police remembrance garden in Hull on Sunday. The event was attended by retired and serving dog handlers, trainers, retired police dogs, and various guests. PC dog handler Steve Matthews stated that the garden serves as “a lasting reminder of the extraordinary contributions” of police dogs. He added that it will stand as “a place of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for all who have served”. Matthews further remarked: “Our police dogs are more than just a tactical option. They are partners in every sense.” He noted that these dogs not only “protect officers and the public” but also “bring joy to our communities”. PC Matthews also mentioned that the ceremony acknowledged handlers, whom he referred to as the “often-unsung heroes of the dog teams”. Humberside Police emphasized the “indispensable role” these animals play in policing, ranging from chasing and detaining suspects to locating missing persons, explosives, and digital devices. The Thin Blue Paw Foundation, an organization that supports retired police dogs across the UK, also participated in the ceremony. Kieran Stanbridge, a co-founder and trustee, described the memorial garden as “a lovely gesture to honour their service”. Stanbridge explained that the charity was established to “protect and support both working and retired police dogs” but also aims to “celebrate their accomplishments and honour their dedication to the job”.
