UEFA has initiated an inquiry following an incident where Manchester City forward Khadija Shaw was struck by an object during her team’s Women’s Champions League victory over Hammarby. Shaw netted both goals for her team in the match, achieving the distinction of becoming Manchester City’s leading all-time scorer in the Women’s Champions League with a total of seven goals. The goals from Shaw, one in each half, contributed to City’s 2-1 triumph at Stockholm Arena on Thursday. This victory guaranteed their progression to the quarter-finals, with two group stage matches still scheduled. After scoring her initial goal, the Jamaican striker’s lively celebration in front of the opposing team’s supporters resulted in her receiving a booking. Video replays additionally appeared to show an item being propelled from the spectator stands in her direction. In an official statement, UEFA confirmed: “Proceedings have been opened against Hammarby IF for throwing of objects (Article 16(2)(b) of the Disciplinary Regulations).” The statement further noted: “Manchester City player Khadija Shaw received a yellow card following her goal presentation for unsporting conduct.” Subsequent to the match, Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood publicly criticized the broadcaster DAZN for its omission of the incident in a social media update. The specific post, published on X, external, claimed that Shaw “antagonised” the home supporters and consequently received “stick” from them. Greenwood responded directly, stating: “Correction. Travel to Stockholm, score a big goal. Celebrates her goal. Gets objects thrown at her.” When contacted by BBC Sport for a statement, the Swedish club, Hammarby IF, commented: “We have been informed about media reports of a thrown object from the stands during the game between Hammarby IF and Manchester City.” They further added: “We have no further information about the case and will await the official investigation of Uefa.”
