The rejection of proposals designed to promote cycling and walking in Guildford has been confirmed. Previously, the communities, environment and highways select committee of Surrey County Council had supported a motion to request senior Conservative councillors to re-evaluate the active travel initiative, which featured separate footpaths and cycle lanes. However, on Tuesday, the cabinet formally declined these proposals for London Road, specifically the section between Boxgrove Road and New Inn Lane. This refusal was based on concerns that cyclists might pose a risk to pedestrians and that the roadway would lack sufficient room for heavy goods vehicles. Surrey leader Tim Oliver stated that he had not observed any fresh evidence presented that would prompt the councillors to alter their stance. Despite this, council officers had previously advised proceeding with the scheme for this significant access route into Guildford from the A3. Nevertheless, the matter has generated differing views among local residents and various advocacy organizations. The Guildford Bike User Group (G-Bug) contended that the proposed changes would enhance safety for both pedestrians and cyclists compared to the existing road layout. Conversely, the Surrey Coalition for Disabled People expressed opposition to the concept of shared spaces at bus stops and on pavements. During the cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, Mr Oliver mentioned that numerous letters had been received from members of the public. He further stated: “At the end of the day there is nothing that I have seen or we have seen that changes our view on the decision that was made by the cabinet on the 29 October.“So that decision will still stand. We will not progress with that part of the scheme.” Post navigation P&R Committee Highlights Potential Project Setbacks if Income Tax Increase Fails Northern Ireland Executive Not to Receive Extra Treasury Funds for PSNI Data Breach
