Renowned heavy metal band Iron Maiden has disclosed plans to tour with a new drummer. Formed in east London in 1975 by bass player Steve Harris, Iron Maiden pioneered the new wave of British heavy metal movement and has since sold over 130 million albums globally. Following 42 years as the band’s drummer, Nicko McBrain declared his retirement from touring, though he will continue to be “firmly part of the Iron Maiden family.” Simon Dawson, a former session drummer originating from Suffolk, is set to take over drumming duties for the band’s “The Run For Your Lives World Tour,” commencing in Budapest in May. Dawson is expected to be a familiar figure to Iron Maiden’s extensive fanbase, having performed for more than ten years with British Lion, another band led by Steve Harris. In a Facebook post, the band stated: “Iron Maiden are delighted to announce that stepping in behind the kit for 2025 is a name familiar to many of our fans.” Simon Dawson, a former session drummer and Steve’s rhythm section partner of the past 12 years with British Lion. The post continued: “A native of Suffolk, England, Simon first teamed up with Steve Harris back in 2012.” Online reactions from fans have shown approval of the new appointment, extending good wishes to McBrain and welcoming Dawson. In a statement published on Iron Maiden’s official website, McBrain conveyed: “After much consideration, it is with both sorrow and joy, I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle.” He further commented: “What can I say? Touring with Maiden the last 42 years has been an incredible journey!” McBrain’s statement concluded by saying: “I look into the future with much excitement and great hope! I’ll be seeing you soon, may God bless you all, and, of course, ‘Up the Irons!'” Rod Smallwood, the band’s manager, stated: “Thank you for being an irrepressible force behind the drum kit for Maiden for 42 years and my friend for even longer. “I speak on behalf of all the band when I say we will miss you immensely!”” The United Kingdom portion of Maiden’s tour is scheduled to include performances at arenas in Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow, alongside a “home” event at the London Stadium.
