A segment of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal has been made available again after undergoing enhancements aimed at improving its accessibility. This two-mile (3.2km) portion, situated between Hirst Lock in Saltaire and Primrose Lane in Bingley, had been closed since October for resurfacing and widening. The path now accommodates wheelchairs, mobility scooters, pedestrians, and cyclists, aligning with national standards. The project was executed collaboratively by the walking and cycling charity Sustrans, the Canal and River Trust, and Bradford Council. A “tar spray and chip” surface treatment is scheduled for application in the spring, intended to match the finish of the towpath section near Salts Mill. The Saltaire to Bingley segment is designated as route 696 within the National Cycle Network. This undertaking forms part of a nationwide initiative, spearheaded by Sustrans and financed by Active Travel England, focused on elevating the quality of the National Cycle Network. Josh Molyneux, Sustrans network development manager, commented: “We’re really happy to be able to reopen the towpath in time for the Christmas holidays. This historic and scenic towpath is a very popular route for all ages, so we’re delighted to be able to make it accessible to many more people, all year round.” Mark Robinson, enterprise manager at Canal & River Trust, stated: “Research shows that spending time by water is good for our physical and mental health. These improvements to the towpath are important because it will make it easier for people to access the wonderful Leeds & Liverpool Canal on their doorstep.” Post navigation Gateshead Highway Flyover Shut Down Following Discovery of “Potential Risk to Safety” Cheshire Family Seeks Compensation Following Holiday Disruption in Kos
