A flyover has been closed after engineers found a “potential risk to safety”. An inspection conducted on the A167 Gateshead Highway flyover, situated near the Tyne Bridge, revealed “serious concerns” regarding specific sections of the structure, which was constructed in the 1960s. Additionally, the road located beneath the flyover, spanning the area between the Park Lane and the Five Bridges roundabout, has also been closed. Martin Gannon, who serves as the leader of Gateshead Council, stated: “It is a big decision, and we recognise the impact this will have on the transport network across the whole area.” He further added, “Public safety has to be our top priority, and so we have acted to shut down the highway immediately.” Engineers have confirmed the safety of the two roundabouts situated beneath the flyover, which will therefore remain operational. This arrangement permits traffic to proceed east/west and facilitates access between the A184 Felling bypass and the Tyne Bridge, as well as to the A1. According to the council, the flyover had undergone regular inspections, and engineers had previously determined that despite the concrete exhibiting signs of deterioration, the structure remained safe for use. However, the council indicated that this assessment is no longer valid. Gannon commented, “The engineers make clear there is a risk to certain sections of the structure, and hence a risk to the travelling public.” Additional inspection checks are scheduled for Sunday and Monday. The council stated its intention to “minimise disruption as far as possible.” Diversion routes have been implemented, and motorists are being advised to utilize alternative routes or public transport.
