Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated that “we will recover our best” after his team experienced four consecutive defeats, a first in his managerial career. This sequence of losses included a 2-1 defeat to Brighton, following earlier setbacks against Bournemouth in the Premier League, Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, and Sporting in the Champions League. Guardiola indicated that City is currently not performing at its customary high level, partly due to injuries affecting key players such as Ruben Dias, John Stones, Kevin de Bruyne, and Jack Grealish. “That’s what it is always about – not being complacent when you win a lot,” Guardiola remarked. He added, “We know how difficult it is and how nice it will be when we win again.” Addressing the present situation, he said, “Right now, we are not at our best, it’s obvious. But it’s still November – we’ll recover our best.” Additional notable absentees for City include Rodri and Oscar Bobb. In response to the squad challenges, Guardiola gave a debut to 19-year-old central defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey against Brighton. Liverpool capitalized on Manchester City’s recent struggles, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points after defeating Aston Villa. Guardiola further commented that his team is not immune to losing, despite their impressive run in recent years, which featured a 32-match unbeaten streak in the league before their defeat by Bournemouth at the beginning of November. Reflecting on his own playing career, he stated, “I was a football player and many times I lost a lot of games – four, five, six in a row.” Guardiola emphasized, “I never expect different, just because we won in the past or that we are special.” He concluded, “People can believe that, but it’s not true.” City previously endured a challenging period in the autumn of 2023, recording only one win in six matches, before ultimately recovering to secure the Premier League title again. Following the upcoming international break, City faces a demanding schedule leading up to Christmas, with fixtures against Tottenham, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Manchester United, and Aston Villa.
