Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg has entered a guilty plea to a domestic abuse charge involving his estranged wife. Appearing before Selkirk Sheriff Court, Hogg admitted to shouting, swearing, and acting abusively towards his wife, Gillian. He also confessed to repeatedly monitoring her movements and sending messages of an alarming and distressing nature. The court was informed that the former Hawick and Glasgow Warriors player, who earned 100 caps for Scotland, once dispatched over 200 messages within a couple of hours. Sheriff Peter Paterson postponed the sentencing until 5 December to allow for the preparation of background reports. Hogg, who currently plays for Montpellier in France, admitted to a single charge related to persistent abusive behavior directed at his now estranged wife. Over a five-year period, concluding in August of this year, he engaged in a pattern of conduct that caused her fear or alarm. Testimony presented in court detailed how the 32-year-old regularly subjected his wife to shouting and swearing, both during their time living in Hawick and later in Exeter, when Hogg was playing for Exeter Chiefs. This conduct, at one instance, led her to experience a panic attack, prompting her to seek guidance from domestic abuse support services. Furthermore, the charge encompassed Hogg’s actions of tracking his wife’s location via the Find My Phone application following their separation in 2023, alongside dispatching hundreds of text messages to her within short periods. Sentencing has been postponed until 5 December, at which time Hogg’s legal representatives are expected to present a comprehensive mitigation. Sheriff Peter Paterson granted him bail until that date, pending the completion of various reports, including an assessment regarding a restriction of liberty. The fullback had retired from professional rugby union prior to last year’s World Cup, having accumulated a hundred senior caps and participated in three British and Irish Lions tours. He continues to be recognized as one of Scotland’s top try scorers in history and received an MBE in the 2024 New Year honours list for his contributions to rugby union. This summer, he emerged from retirement to sign a two-year contract with Montpellier. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
