BBC Jersey has initiated the Thousand Mile Challenge in support of Children in Need. This initiative involves all local BBC stations throughout the British Isles collectively swimming a total distance of 1,600km (1,000 miles) to generate funds for the charitable cause. Consequently, each participating station is required to complete 40km (24 miles) of swimming by the close of Friday. BBC Jersey is undertaking its segment of the challenge at the AquaSplash pool, where participants must swim an average of 63 lengths daily to meet their objective. Gemma Daubeney and Luca Bott Parkinson completed their initial swims for the challenge jointly. Ms Daubeney remarked, “Luca’s amazing technique has really inspired me,” and further commented, “My snail’s pace will keep him humble.” Mr Bott Parkinson stated, “I feel like it’s day five [but] we rounded up the swim to 70 lengths; so less swimming to do next time.” Kate Jennings, Chris Craddock and Alison Moss are also participating in this endeavor. Chris Craddock was the inaugural member of BBC Jersey to enter the pool for the challenge. He described it as a “decent start” and noted he was “a bit out of breath but still going strong.” “I was in the pool for an hour and did my 63 lengths while taking it relatively easy for the first day,” Mr Craddock further elaborated. BBC Children in Need presently allocates approximately £210,000 to support various projects within Jersey. For updates, follow BBC Jersey on X and Facebook.
