Pep Guardiola has affirmed his commitment to Manchester City, stating he will remain with the club even if they face relegation due to alleged breaches of financial rules. He also claimed that “75%” of rival clubs desire their demotion. Mr. Guardiola recently extended his contract by two years, securing his tenure at City until 2027. The 53-year-old has pledged his long-term commitment to the club, despite a decision on the 115 Premier League charges City are facing not being anticipated until early next year. City maintain their innocence, but potential sanctions following a guilty verdict could range from a substantial fine to points deductions or even relegation. Guardiola previously stated a year ago that he would manage the team in League One if necessary. He reiterated this stance on Friday, prior to the Premier League encounter with Tottenham. “I said that six months ago. You have my interviews,” he said. “I said when all the clubs accused us of doing something wrong and people say ‘what happens if we are relegated?’ I will be here.” “I don’t know the position they are going to bring us, the Conference? [But] next year we will come up and come up and come back to the Premier League.” “I knew it then, I feel it now.” However, Guardiola clarified that the charges were not a factor in his decision to extend his stay, emphasizing that addressing the team’s recent performance, marked by four consecutive defeats for the first time in his managerial career, was more pressing. “I read something about the situation and how you need to be relegated immediately,” he added. “Seventy-five per cent of the clubs want it, because I know what they do behind the scenes and this sort of stuff. But I don’t live with it, I live with the four defeats, what I have to do. There are lawyers on both sides. I don’t think about it.” A separate point of discussion revolved around whether a lack of suitable replacements influenced Guardiola’s decision to sign a new deal with Manchester City. Guardiola was notably forthcoming as he spoke to the media for over 25 minutes. Acknowledging the team’s current four-match losing streak, the first since his arrival at the club in 2016, Guardiola repeatedly mentioned his achievement of winning an unprecedented four league titles in a row. “Two sides of the same coin,” is how he described it. He also detailed his extensive injury problems, adding midfielder Mateo Kovacic to the list of those unavailable for the visit of Ange Postecoglou’s side, but confirmed that central defensive trio John Stones, Manuel Akanji, and Nathan Ake may well be fit. Ballon D’Or winner Rodri, a key player whose absence has been particularly noticeable, will be at the Etihad Stadium tomorrow, though his involvement will be limited to greeting others as he continues his recovery from knee surgery. A significant topic of discussion was Guardiola’s contract. Reports earlier in the week indicated he had agreed to a one-year contract extension, with the understanding that any additional season would be included as ‘an option’. The rationale behind the agreement covering two seasons instead of one was noted, particularly given Guardiola’s assertion that negotiations were concluded in two hours. “For the weather!” he said initially, before offering a serious response: “It’s a good question. Mainly I don’t want next season in September, October, November to be [about] ‘Pep, will he extend again?’. I don’t want to be in that position.” “In the end, the contract is there. I would like to stay two more years but I know if the results are not good I will not stay for two more years. We have legendary players here in the team but if we don’t perform our fans and chairman will ask what is going on and you have to change. Everyone is under pressure. I have the contract but maybe in a month I am not here.” Such an outcome is difficult to envision, even if City’s losing streak were to continue. Guardiola is aware of this, and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak knows it too. “In just two hours, we did it,” he revealed. “Maybe I am arrogant, but I think we deserve to continue for what we have done in the last years.” Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has secured 18 trophies since arriving at the club in 2016.
