A community Christmas tree in South Yorkshire has been taken down after it was repeatedly toppled by strong winds and acts of anti-social behaviour. Barnsley Council confirmed that the spruce, situated in Goldthorpe’s Horse and Groom Square, had to be removed following instances where powerful gusts knocked it over, alongside reports of its lights being severed by vandals. Councillor Wendy Cain, the council’s cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, stated: “Despite our best efforts to maintain the tree, the situation has become unsustainable.” A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police commented: “Inquiries are ongoing to determine if any incidents of vandalism have taken place at the location.” “We are working closely with local officers from South Yorkshire Police regarding the issues with the Christmas tree,” Cain informed the Local Democracy Reporting Service. She further added: “Our goal has always been to bring joy to the community, and we will continue to explore ways to create a positive festive experience for residents while balancing the practical challenges we’ve faced this year.” Post navigation Inquest Reveals Motorcyclist in Fatal Collision Was Three Times Over Drink-Drive Limit South Belfast Property Incident Investigated as Hate Crime
