Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire Commences After Over a Year of Hostilities

An armistice between Israel and Hezbollah commenced in Lebanon following over a year of hostilities. The truce started at 04:00 local time (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday, bringing a provisional halt to almost 14 months of confrontation involving Israel and the Iran-supported militant organization. The agreement was disclosed on Tuesday evening by Israel, France, and the United States, with President Joe Biden stating its objective was a “permanent cessation of hostilities”. Both parties engaged in attacks until just prior to the ceasefire’s commencement. Israel issued evacuation directives for areas of Beirut four hours ahead of the ceasefire deadline, conducting strikes approximately one hour before. Hezbollah, similarly, launched drones into Israel in the hours preceding the cessation of combat. Moments after the ceasefire took effect, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) cautioned residents of southern Lebanon against “heading towards the villages that the IDF has ordered to be evacuated or towards IDF forces in the area”.
